A special event has been held at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul to mark 50 days until the start of the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang.

The event was hosted by Kim Jung-sook, the First Lady of South Korea, and welcomed delegates such as the President of the Pyeongchang 2018 Lee Hee-beom, Vice-Minister for Culture, Sports and Tourism Roh Tae-kang and Korea Paralympic Committee President Lee Myung-ho.

Following their digital launch, the medals for the upcoming Paralympic Games were showcased to the public for the first time with designer Lee Seok-woo giving a short presentation on the creative process behind the design.

Pyeongchang 2018 volunteers also attended the event, along with a selection of ice hockey athletes and possible athletes of the future, including 11-year-old Park Hyeon Kyu, one of the country’s brightest stars in junior wheelchair basketball.

The Voices of Seoul choir, which features students with a variety of special needs, also performed at the event.

"Today’s celebration marks just 50 days until the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games begins and we are counting down with much excitement and anticipation," said Hee-beom.

"We have heard some remarkable stories from some of our para athletes with us today and I hope our nation unites and joins us in Pyeongchang to support their remarkable achievements."

There was also an exhibition, which will remain open until January 21, for guests to visit.

The exhibition contains the Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympic Torch and medals, along with exhibits from Paralympic sponsor Ottobock, who are providing equipment to the athletes during the Games.

Tickets for the Games are now on sale with each oneincluding access to the Olympic Plaza in Pyeongchang and the Olympic Park in Gangneung where spectators will be able to participate in cultural celebrations and activities and witness the medal ceremonies.
