Italy and Sweden won the respective men’s and women’s team sprint events as action concluded today at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup in Dresden..

In the women’s event, Sweden’s second team of Ida Ingemarsdotter, a double Sochi 2014 Olympic medallist, and Maja Dahlqvist triumphed in a time of 13min 33.40sec in the German city.

They finished 0.16 seconds ahead of Sweden’s first team, which consisted of Hanna Falk and Stina Nilsson.

The United States’ first team of Ida Sargent and Sophie Caldwell were 0.23 seconds off the pace in third.

A photo-finish review was required to separate Caldwell and Nilsson on the line.

"Ida gave me the best position," Dahlqvist said.

"I was skiing well all the way and had some energy left for the sprint.

"I was so happy when I realised we were first.

"It is amazing."

In the men’s event, Italy’s first team of Federico Pellegrino and Dietmar Noeckler came out on top in 12:18.31.

Pellegrino sealed victory by making a big move on the small climb just before the finish.

"I had space again on the small hill," he said.

"I took it.

"It is great to win with Didi."

Sweden’s first team of Emil Joensson and Teodor Peterson were 1.07 seconds behind in the runners-up spot.

Russia’s first team of Andrey Krasnov and Gleb Retivykh were 1.23 seconds back in third.

The FIS Cross-Country World Cup is scheduled to resume next weekend.

Planica in Slovenia will play host to a two-day event.
