United States recovered from a goal down to beat Sweden and claim a fourth successive International Ice Hockey Federation Women's Under-18 World Championship in Dmitrov in Russia today.

The US, who won a thrilling semi-final shoot-out against Canada yesterday, were stunned in the first period at the Ice Palace Dmitrov when Sweden opened the scoring.

Thea Johansson scored to put the European side in front.

But Dominique Petrie and Katelyn Knoll managed two goals each as the 2015, 2016 and 2017 winners roared into a 9-1 lead at the end of the second period.

Sweden fought back with two late strikes but eventually lost 9-3.

Canada gained the consolation prize of a bronze medal after winning the day's earlier game against hosts Russia.

Alexie Guay managed a goal and two assists for Canada as the North American side enjoyed a 5-1 victory.

Russian appeared visible drained as they struggled to recover from their semi-final loss against Sweden.

Courtney Vorster, Andrey-Anne Veillette and Julia Gosling also found the net for the winning side.

Vita Ponyatovskaya managed Russia's consolation goal.

The US have now won six titles in total in comparison with four for Canada.

Sweden became the first team other than the two North American powerhouses to feature in the top two positions.
