Japan's Shingo Kunieda beat top seed Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina to reach the semi-finals of the men's singles event at the Sydney International Wheelchair Tennis Open.

The double Paralympic singles gold medallist battled back from a set down to oust the Argentinian 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 at the Blacktown Tennis Centre.

Kunieda, the seventh seed, will face compatriot Takashi Sanada as he continued his fairytale run at the tournament with victory over Frenchman Stephane Houdet.

Sanada, the event's surprise package so far, overcame the third seed 7-6, 6-4 to progress to the last four.

The other semi-final will be a repeat of both the Rio 2016 gold medal match and the Wheelchair Tennis Masters final as Gordon Reid will take on team-mate Alfie Hewett.

Paralympic champion Reid booked his place in the next round with a comfortable 6-1, 6-3 win against Nicolas Peifer of France.

His fellow Briton Hewett proved too strong for Sweden's Stefan Olsson in the last quarter-final as he recorded a 6-4, 6-3 triumph.

In the women's singles tournament, top seed Yui Kamiji safely booked her semi-final place after she beat Britain's Lucy Shuker 6-1, 6-3.

Kamiji will take on Sabine Ellerbrock after the German swept aside compatriot Katharina Kruger 6-3, 6-2.

Dutch player Diede de Groot also enjoyed a straightforward win as she overcame South Africa's Kgothatso Montjane 6-2, 6-2.

De Groot will play fifth seed Aniek van Koot in the semi-finals after fellow Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis retired hurt when trailing 6-4, 2-1.

The tournament in the Australian city continues tomorrow.
