Japan's Koji Sugeno set up a meeting with American top seed David Wagner as he reached the quarter-finals of the Sydney International Wheelchair Tennis Open with victory over Harry Boniface Prabhu.

Sugeno was in dominant form as he thrashed his Indian opponent 6-0, 6-0 as quad singles action began at the Blacktown Tennis Centre.

The Japanese player will face Wagner as they battle for a place in the last four tomorrow.

Sugeno's team-mate Mitsuteru Moroishi also progressed to the quarter-finals as he beat Chinese Taipei’s Chu-Yin Huang 6-0, 6-1.

Moroishi's reward for a comprehensive win in his opening encounter is a match against Australian star Dylan Alcott, the double wheelchair tennis Paralympic Games gold medallist and second seed.

These contests were the only two matches to take place on the opening day of the quad singles event.

In the women's doubles, Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock and South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane battled through to the semi-finals as they edged The Netherlands' Marjolein Buis and Katharina Kruger of Germany 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

Ellerbrock and Montjane will face top seeds Diede de Groot and Aniek van Koot of The Netherlands in the next round after the Dutch duo outclassed Japan’s Saki Takamuro and Manami Tanaka 6-1, 6-2.

Wheelchair Doubles Masters champions Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid, of Britain, won their opening match in the men's doubles, beating Japan’s Daisuke Arai and Yoshinobu Fujimoto 6-2, 6-1.

The tournament in Sydney is due to continue tomorrow.
