Pyeongchang 2018 have sent out a memo urging those considering attending the Winter Olympics and Paralympics to take advantage of 18,000 hotel rooms in the local area and a further 27,000 within one hour of the venues.

This message comes after months of concerns over the quantity, quality and affordability of hotel rooms for all those attending the Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) claimed late last year that "steady progress" had been made in the construction of 11 hotels still required for the Games.

He had previously warned that it was a "very tight" situation as 11 hotels were not yet completed, some of which were viewed as essential to house those working at the event.

Many spectators have booked rooms in Seoul and are planning to use hire-cars or the high-speed railway to reach the venues, 160 kilometres to the east.

Others have been put off by the high prices being charged.

But Pyeongchang are now claiming that enough rooms are available, although it is not clear how many of the 18,000 and 27,000 totals have already been taken-up.

A free shuttle bus will supposedly link all hotels within the one hour radius with the venues.

"Skyrocketing accommodation fees are no longer a concern at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Games, with facilities now content to accept lower room rates than originally planned," read the memo.

"The average cost per night for a motel in the host city is now KRW100,000 (£65/$93/€73) to KRW250,000 (£160/$143/€170) down from KRW 500,000 (£325/$460/€350).

"With about 30 days until the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Games, continued communication between the Government and accommodation facilities will stabilise prices even further."

Those who are overcharged more than this are urged to report it to organisers.

Interested parties are also urged to use Airbnb, the official Pyeongchang 2018 sponsor, to help reserve accommodation.
