The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) confirmed over half of tickets for the event, scheduled to run from March 8 to 18, had been purchased.

The number includes group sales.

It means 110,000 of the 220,000 tickets on offer for the Paralympics have now been sold.

Para-snowboard is the most popular sport as 84 per cent of tickets for events have been purchased in the discipline.

Alpine skiing has also enjoyed strong sales, with Pyeongchang 2018 claiming 71 per cent of tickets for events in the sport have been sold.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, the sales figure for the Winter Paralympics on December 21 was just 37 per cent.

"Ticket sales are now above 50 per cent and we are encouraged by Pyeongchang 2018's progress," a spokesperson for the IPC told insidethegames.

The update comes following a concerted effort from the IPC to pressure Pyeongchang 2018 into increasing their Paralympic ticket sales effort.

Ticket sales have been one of the main areas of concern regarding the Paralympics after an update in October revealed just 0.2 per cent had been sold.

A Pyeongchang 2018 spokeswoman disputed this, however, and claimed it was actually 4.3 per cent when group sales were taken into account. 

IPC President Andrew Parsons then reported significant movement after he criticised poor ticket sales.

The IPC have continually expressed how they expect full venues when the Games are held in the South Korean resort.

Parsons raised the issue with the President of Pyeongchang 2018, Lee Hee-beom, and the South Korean President Moon Jae-in while visiting the country. 

Tickets were made available at dedicated Winter Paralympic Games counters in November.

The counters are operating at Seoul's two main airports - Incheon International Airport and Gimpo International Airport - and 19 high-speed railway stations.

They are also available at Seoul City Hall, Gangwon Provincial Office, Gangneung City Hall and at a selection of other Government organisation locations.
