Video Assistant Referees (VAR) being used at the FIFA World Cup in Russia is set to be given the green light by the International Football Associations Board (IFAB) at a meeting in Zurich later this month.

According to British newspaper The Times, the IFAB will also recommend rolling out the technology across all leagues from next season during the meeting in the Swiss city on January 22.

The IFAB will gather for their annual business meeting at FIFA's headquarters, with the use of VAR on the agenda.

The potential inclusion of the technology at the tournament in Russia comes despite a trial phase in leagues such as Ligue 1 in France, Serie A in Italy and the Bundesliga in Germany uncovering several issues.

The system, which can only decide whether or not to award a goal or a penalty, for straight red cards and in cases of mistaken player identity, has been met with a mixed response.

FIFA has consistently lauded the benefits of VAR, however, and is keen to introduce it at the World Cup.

An "indicative decision" on its use will be made at the IFAB meeting.

"We will have had approaching 1,000 matches which have used it one way or another," IFAB technical director and former referee David Elleray told The Times

"Generally I think it has gone much better than people have anticipated and almost every week we get an inquiry from another league about using VARs.

"Across the world we are talking about a decision being reviewed or corrected once every three matches. I think that’s why the general level of acceptance of VARs is so high because those people who were opposed to it said that it will just disrupt and destroy the flow of the game."

The technology is due to be used in England for the first time on Monday (January 8) during an FA Cup match between Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.
