Sweden's Matts Olsson claimed his first-ever victory at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine World Cup after parallel giant slalom competition in Alta Badia.

The 29-year-old beat Austria's Marcel Hirscher in the semi-final by just 0.05 seconds with a time of 19.28sec in the head-to-head format.

The bronze medallist from the team event at the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen then came out on top against Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway in the all-Scandinavian final.

Olsson recorded a time of 19.33, which Sochi 2014 bronze medalist Kristoffersen was just 0.03 seconds shy of.

The bronze medal was claimed by Hirscher, who is looking for a sixth overall World Cup crown in a row, after he defeated Norway's Alexander Aamodt Kilde by 0.08 seconds.

Despite only coming third, Hirscher still tops the overall leaderboard with 320 points to his name, 35 points in front of Kristoffersen in second.

Gold medalist Olsson has leapt up the table into third thanks to the 100 ranking points he picked up today.

He sits 87 points behind Kristoffersen.

The athletes will stay in Italy for their next event in Madonna Di Campiglio on December 22.

Women's giant slalom will take place in Courchevel in France tomorrow.
