USA Taekwondo have announced the appointments of coaches Paul Green and Gareth Brown as they seek to reinvigorate their programme.

Both coaches had been part of the successful GB Taekwondo set-up, with Green having coached Jade Jones to two Olympic gold medals.

He has also coached newly crowned World Taekwondo Female Athlete of the Year, Bianca Walkden, who recently became the first taekwondo athlete to win all four Grand Prix events in a series.

The pair are due to  join USA Taekwondo on February 1, where they will take up the post of national team coaching directors.

It is hoped they will help to develop and grow the United States’ programme with the target of making it the most successful in the world by the time of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

USA Taekwondo claim the appointments mark the start of their biggest-ever talent identification process and is aimed at finding potential medal winners for Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.

"It was quite a scrap to get this done, as Paul and Gareth were understandably in huge demand around the world when news broke of their resignations in Britain, but I am delighted that we now have them on board and excited by the possibilities, as I know they are too," Steve McNally, USA Taekwondo executive director, said.

"This is a significant investment in our athletes, and a sure sign of our intent to make the United States a fearsome prospect to face for any country drawn against us in future."

"Our whole organisation is focused on being ready to make the United States proud when the Games return to our shores in 2028.

"Of course we want to win in Tokyo [2020] and Paris, but we intend to dominate in Los Angeles."

USA Taekwondo have also confirmed the appointment of Olympic coach Jason Poos as their Para-taekwondo head coach.

The American will now be tasked with guiding the team towards success at Tokyo 2020, where taekwondo is due to make its debut on the Paralympic programme.

"We have some great coaches in the US already, and these hires strengthen our hand significantly,” Mayumi Spence, USA Taekwondo high performance director, said.

"We hope and expect our home coaches will work with myself, Paul, Gareth and Jason to make sure we meet our goals, support our athletes and continue the rapid improvements we have already made this year.

"The US programme has been depressed for years - there is no hiding from that - and we are all working hard to jolt it back into life.

"I am constantly in awe of the talent, work ethic and desire that I see in the people I work with every day - both athletes and coaches - and this move is key in helping to turn all that effort into gold medals in both able-bodied and para.

"This is not about pushing anybody out, it is about making sure we give everybody the best opportunity to win."
