Germany's orld champion Johannes Lochner, and his team of brakemen Joshua Bluhm, Christopher Weber and Christian Rasp were victorious in the four man bobsleigh race at the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup in Winterberg.

In an event dominated by the host nation they posted a time of 1min 49.03sec and finished almost a quarter-of-a-second ahead of compatriots Nico Walther and his squad of Marko Huebenbecker, Kevin Korona and Eric Franke, who finished in 1:49.26.

"A win like today is always amazing as it boosts your confidence," Lochner, also the current European champion, said.

"I am proud of my squad, they did a great job at the start."

Walther, a runner-up in both this year's European Championships and the 2015 World Championships, was disappointed by his start which cost him in the fine margins.

"Getting onto the podium is definitely better than the result in the two-man," he said.

"However, we really need to work on our start.

"Seven or eight hundredths of a second is way too big of a difference."

Third were another German quartet of Francesco Friedrich, Jannis Baecker, Martin Grothkopp and Thorsten Margis, who finished the course another tenth of a second back in 1:49.36.

They had tied with Lochner last winter to share the World Championship title.

"I think things have balanced out pretty well with the result today," Friedrich said.

"However, there are still a few areas we need to work on.

"Despite all the snow, the conditions were fair today; they were the same for all of us."

Almost half-a-second behind the winners were Canadians Justin Kripps, Alexander Kopacz,  Jesse Lumsden and Oluseyi Smith, fourth in a time of 1:49.52.

.Lochner, with 826 points, has now extended his lead in the overall standings for the 2017-2018 IBSF World Cup after winning two out of the four races.

Walther, with 787 points, heads into the second half of the Olympic season in second place.

The Canadians led by Kripps are in third with 754 points.

The next round is due to take place in Innsbruck, starting on Friday (December 15) and concluding on Sunday (December 17).
