Jörg Förster has been elected as the chairman of the German University Sports Federation (ADH) at their General Assembly.

The head of Hamburg University Sport had been serving as the Acting President of the body, after formerly being in charge of its finances.

Förster was elected by a majority vote at the Assembly, while the University of Stuttgart's Melanie Haag was confirmed as his replacement in the financial position.

Delegates representing 196 member universities were present at the 112th General Assembly, which began with Förster outlining changes brought about by the introduction of new statutes for the organisation.

He also reflected on a national campaign to promote exercise in 32 universities, as well as looking back at the country's performance at the Almaty and Taipei Universiades earlier this year.

Germany secured two silvers and one bronze medal at the Winter Universiade in Almaty, while they won seven gold, six silver and 11 bronze at the Summer Univerisade.

Förster and ADH honorary member Thomas Beyer made the proposition for TU Berlin's Doris Schmidt to be made an honorary member of the organisation.

The proposal was approved by the Assembly by acclamation.

Projects conducted throughout the year were assessed, including boosting active break times for employees and students at universities.

The organisation of this year's German University Volleyball Championship was also examined.

Peter Beuth, Minister of the Interior and Sport of the State of Hesse, gave a keynote speech which promoted the idea of a "dual career".

He called on universities to support athletes seeking to progress in both their sport and careers, while the importance of boosting students' health was also reflected upon.

Lothar Bösing was re-elected as a spokesman for the organisation's sports advisory council, while Michael Mahler was elected to the body.

A presentation of the ADH's financial statements for 2016 was given, before the Assembly concluded with Förster delivering the organisation's plan for 2018.
