Turkish wrestler Evin Demirhan, who had to come through a qualification event in the morning on her way to the final, maintained excellent form throughout the fifth day of the United World Wrestling Senior Under-23 World Championships at the Artego Arena in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

She dispatched Ritu Ritu of India in the 48 kilograms final by a final score of 3-1 on a day of women's bouts.

This result capped off a good end to the year for the 22-year-old, who also won bronze at the 2017 World Wrestling Championships in Paris in October.

Dermirhan went into the final full of confidence thanks to her convincing victories earlier in the day against Azerbaijan’s Turkan Nasirova, 7-3, and Rina Okuno of Japan, 3-1, in the quarter and semi finals respectively.

However, she very nearly did not make it beyond the qualifying round as, just like in the final, it was her final score total of 3-1 that saw her come through against Belarussian Ksenia Stankevich after a points total of 6-6.

Demirhan's final opponent Ritu was clearly feeling the effects of a day where a lot had gone against her.

The Indian had been involved in several close contests throughout the day, particularly her close 4-3 victory over Jiang Zhu of China in the semi finals.

The final of the 53kg event saw a brilliant comeback from Japan’s Miho Igarashi.

The 20-year-old had gone 2-0 down to her Chinese opponent Qi Zhang but rallied back to complete a comprehensive 12-2 victory.

Much like the 48kg event, the winner was an athlete who had recorded clear victories throughout the day.

Igarashi had recorded 6-1, 12-2 and 9-4 victories in her build up to the final whereas Qi had participated in a number of much closer contests.

The final of the 60kg event was between Yui Sakano of Japan and Ukrainian Ilona Prokopevniuk, with both having to come through the qualifying round earlier in the day on their way to the final.

It was Prokopevniuk, who lost her bronze medal match at the Junior World Wrestling Championship back in August, who took the initiative and went 2-1 up after a stuttering start to the contest.

Sakano quickly managed to pull it back round to 3-2 a few seconds later before eventually clinching a 7-3 win.

Koumba Selene Fanta Larroque of France took gold in the 69kg event.

She had to get through a qualifier at the start of the day but obliterated every opponent in her path en-route to the final, conceding only five points in the process.

She kept her excellent form in the final with a 4-0 win over Japan’s Naruha Matsuyuki, who took fifth at this year’s Junior World Championships,

Tomorrow sees the men's wrestling once again take centre stage with four freestyle titles up for grabs in the 57kg, 61kg, 86kg and 125kg events.
