Moldova’s Daniel Cataraga was among the victors on the opening day of the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships at Bydgoszcz in Poland.

Cataraga was in impressive form at the Artego Arena, as he stormed into the 71 kilogram Greco-Roman final.

He then became the first gold medallist of the inaugural Championships, as he claimed an impressive 5-0 victory over Robert Fritsch of Hungary in the final.

Turkey’s Murat Dag and Iran’s Farshad Mirahmad Belfakeh secured bronze medals, after they earned wins over Russia’s Rinat Akhmedov and Riccardo Vito Abbrescia of Italy.

Hungary’s Erik Szilvassy earned the second world title of his career, adding to the world university title he claimed in 2016.

The Hungarian prevailed in the 85kg final, as he eased to a 4-0 success over Croatian wrestler Ivan Huklek.

Azerbaijan’s Islam Abbasov joined the pair on the podium, as he overcame Georgia’s Gurami Khetsuriani 2-1 in the first bronze medal match.

Finland’s Toni Metsomaeki claimed the second bronze, after Ukrainian rival Ruslan Mahomedov was forced to withdraw from their bout due to injury.

There was success for Turkey in the 75kg competition, with Fatih Cengiz battling to a 5-2 win in the gold medal contest against Georgia’s Gela Bolkvadze.

Kyrgyzstan’s Esen Asanov beat Azerbaijan’s Nasir Hasanov 1-0 in the first bronze medal bout, before Iran’s Payam Abdeh Saleh Payani triumphed 6-2 against Miras Barshylykov of Kazakhstan.

The final division of the opening day saw Russia’s Aleksandr Golovin beat Finland’s Matti Kuosmanen 5-3 in the 98kg final.

China’s Abudourexiti Alimujiang beat Belarus’ Bopembe Sychev 3-0 for the first bronze medal, with Turkey’s Fatih Baskoy overcoming Greece’s Michail Iosifidis  4-2 to complete the podium.

Greco-Roman wrestling will conclude tomorrow, before two days of women’s action following.

Action will conclude with the men’s freestyle event, which will take place from November 25 to 26.

The under-23 event was been launched following the success of the European version in 2016, where over 400 wrestlers from 34 nations participated.
