Algeria continued their winning start to the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships African Qualification Tournament by overcoming Egypt in Durban.

Their men’s team had recorded three straight victories in the round robin phase, prior to their encounter with Egypt at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre.

A strong performance from the Algerian team saw them claim a 69-50 win, placing them at the top of the standings.

It also boosts their prospects of defending their title, with the team looking likely to reach the semi-finals.

Morocco benefited from Egypt’s defeat, as they leapfrogged them into second place in the group table.

The Moroccans eased to a 74-33 success against Zimbabwe.

They now have a record of two wins and one defeat from their three ties, with Egypt occupying third place with the same record.

Hosts South Africa secured their first victory on the tournament, as they stormed to a 134-18 success against Kenya.

South Africa were due to face Angola in the final match of the day, but the clash was postponed.

The IWBF state the tie will be rescheduled.

Seven teams are featuring in a single group of the men’s event, with the top four at the end advancing to the semi-finals.

The winners of the event will progress to the IWBF World Championships in German city Hamburg next year.

Ghana and Nigeria both withdrew from the men's competition for financial reasons.

Algeria appear on course to defend their women’s title, having recorded their second straight win in the four team event.

They secured a 51-21 win over South Africa to top the standings, while Zimbabwe triumphed 37-14 against Kenya.
