Australia’s Indianna Heibloem was among the winners as the flyweight competition took centre stage on the opening day of the 2017 International Boxing Association Women’s Youth World Championships in Guwahati.

Heibloem looked in strong form against Commonwealth Youth Games silver medallist Shylah Waikai, out-boxing the New Zealander in the opening contest at the Indian city’s Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium.

The victory sets up a tough tie against Kazakhstan’s Zhansaya Abdraimova, who beat France’s Johanna Wonyou in her bout.

Among the other boxers through to the last-16 is Ukraine’s Anastasia Lisinska after she defeated Charlotte Hoffmann, a late call-up to the Germany team.

Next up for the European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) Women’s Youth Boxing Championships silver medallist is home favourite Jyoti Singh.

Also tasting victory today was Turkey’s Beyza Saracoglu thanks to an assured display against Sri Lanka’s Imesha Sewwandi Kumarage Watthe.

The 17-year-old’s reward is a meeting with Hungary’s Emilia Kondakor, an EUBC Women’s Youth Boxing Championships bronze medallist.

One of the performances of the first day came from Russia’s Ekaterina Molchanova, who earned a unanimous points win over Ireland’s Shauna Blaney.

The Russian number one will now go toe-to-toe with Uzbekistan’s Khursandoy Kholmatova in the next round.

In the final bout of day one, Tajikistan’s two-time national champion Madina Gaforova exceeded all expectations as she edged a tight match against China’s Wang Yan.

After winning on four of the five judges’ scorecards, Gaforova will now be hoping to build on her success when she meets Chinese Taipei’s Chen Tzu Hsuan on Tuesday (November 21).

An Opening Ceremony celebrating local culture brought an end to today’s proceedings.

Tomorrow will see a total of 30 bouts take place.

Boxers will take to the ring in the light flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight categories.
