Defending men's champions Algeria began the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships African Qualification Tournament with a thumping win in Durban today.

The North Africans hammered Kenya 107-13 at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre in the South African city.

Bilel Ayache led the way for Algeria, scoring 21 points in the rout as round robin play began.

All seven teams are playing in a single group with the top four at the end advancing to the semi-finals.

The winners of the event will progress to the IWBF World Championships in German city Hamburg next year.

Hosts South Africa began their tournament with defeat as they went down 68-41 to Morocco.

Egypt collected a thumping win, breezing past Zimbabwe 76-33.

Angola are the other country involved in the tournament and will begin their campaign tomorrow with two matches against Algeria and Zimbabwe.

Algeria will also play against Morocco with South Africa meeting Egypt.

Ghana and Nigeria both withdrew from the men's event for financial reasons.

The women's tournament is also scheduled to begin tomorrow with a sole place also available for the World Championships.

South Africa will host defending champions Algeria, Zimbabwe and Kenya in a four-team event.

Tomorrow's first games see South Africa play Zimbabwe and Algeria meet Kenya.
