He was the chief of referees for the FISU World University 3x3 Basketball League and has been involved since the inaugural FISU 3x3 event in 2015.

In all he worked nearly 1,000 games in an officiating career that started in 1985, including more than 100 games in the EuroLeague.

"Gianluca will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of working with him during his time on and off the 3x3 basketball courts, both with FIBA and FISU," a FISU statement said.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends."
