Great Britain beat Canada to seal their place at the top of the round-robin standings at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Co-Ed Slow Pitch World Cup in Florida.

Canada were unbeaten going into the last match of the round-robin stage, but the North Americans fell to a 17-14 loss at the Plant City Stadium and subsequently dropped to second place on run difference.

Victory for Britain was their third of a perfect day, which earlier saw them defeat The Bahamas 18-6 and the Turks and Caicos Islands 29-7.

It meant they finished with a record of five wins from six matches with a run difference of 40.

Canada, who overcame The Bahamas 26-8 and Curaçao 25-14 today, also ended on five wins from six matches but with an inferior run difference of 38.

Hosts United States ranked third after concluding their round-robin campaign by beating Bulgaria 30-0 and the Turks and Caicos Islands 29-7.

Defending champions The Bahamas had to settle for fourth spot, despite bouncing back from their losses to Britain and Canada to defeat Curaçao 16-2.

Today’s two other matches both involved Bulgaria with the Balkan nation losing 18-16 to Curaçao before overcoming the Turks and Caicos Islands 23-12.

Curaçao, Bulgaria and the Turks and Caicos Islands occupied fifth, sixth and seventh place respectively.

Knock-out action is due to begin tomorrow with the US facing the Turks and Caicos Islands, The Bahamas meeting Curaçao and Bulgaria going up against Canada.

Britain's next outing will be against the winner of the match between the US and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Co-ed slow pitch features both male and female athletes playing together alongside one another on the field.

Each team is allowed a maximum of 20 players, with no fewer than five being of one gender.

The Bahamas earned victory in 2016 by beating Britain 22-11.
