Triple Paralympic champion Ewa Durska has received the World Fair Play Diploma from the International Fair Play Committee after selling one of her gold medals to help a nine-year-old girl with cancer.

The Polish shot-putter won her third F20 title at Rio 2016 and auctioned off her prize from the Brazilian city to help compatriot Victoria.

According to the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) website, Durska, also the champion at Sydney 2000 and London 2012, felt that her medal "would be better used to potentially save someone's life than just staying inside her closet as a piece of memorabilia".

"While being in Rio for the Paralympic Games, I decided that if won a medal, I would do this," said Durska.

"I did win it in the end, so I could do my part.

"Currently, Victoria is undergoing transplantation.

"I feel good, and I'm happy to help."

Durska was honoured alongside double Polish Olympic silver medallist Piotr Malachowski.

The discus thrower helped raise money for the medical treatment of a three-year-old boy.

They were both nominated by Dr. Leszek Sibilski, a professor of sociology at Montgomery College in Maryland in the United States.

Durska follows other athletes who have sold their medals for good causes.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Iranian Olympic weightlifting champion Kianoush Rostami is to sell his gold medal to help earthquake victims in his country.
