Durban is poised to stage the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships African Qualification Tournament.

Matches are set to begin on Saturday (November 18), with competition scheduled to run until November 26.

The men’s tournament will feature seven teams, including the host nation South Africa.

They will be joined in a round robin stage by Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco and Zimbabwe.

Ghana and Nigeria had been due to take part in the tournament, but later notified the IWBF that they had opted to withdraw from the event.

The competition format changed to a single round robin, with the top four teams set to advance to the semi-finals and then final.

Algeria will be the favourites to triumph at the event, as they seek to defend the title they earned at 2015 edition of the event.

They also triumphed in the women’s competition two years ago, with their team set to seek a repeat in South Africa.

They are due to face the host nation, along with Kenya and Zimbabwe.

A total of 36 games will be played across the seven days of competition at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre.

The winners of both the men’s and women’s events will progress to the IWBF World Championships in Hamburg.

The Championships will feature 16 men’s and 12 women’s teams, with competition taking place at the Wilhelmsburger Inselparkarena next August.

Australia have won the last two men’s tournaments, beating the United States 63-57 in the 2014 final in Incheon, South Korea.

Canada beat Germany 54-50 in the women’s event, which took place in Toronto.
