China's Zhang Qiang and Minnie Soo Wai Yam of Hong Kong both beat previous World Tour winners to secure their place in the main draw at the International Table Tennis Federation Swedish Open in Stockholm.

Zhang produced a superb display to oust South Korea's Seo Hyo-won, a three-time victor on the World Tour circuit, 11-8, 12-10, 11-7, 12-10 at the Eriksdalshallen sport complex in the Swedish capital.

She was joined in the main draw of the women's singles tournament by Yam, who also prevailed in straight sets.

The player from Hong Kong also accounted for an athlete from South Korea as she proved too strong for Choi Hyo-joo 14-12, 11-8, 14-12, 11-6.

"After I lost in the second round of the under-21 women's singles event two days ago I felt really down but I won both my matches in the women's singles group and for sure that gave me confidence," said Yam.

China’s Chen Xingtong also made it through the women's singles qualification round after she beat Viktoria Pavlovich of Belarus 11-4, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9.

Yu Mengyu of Singapore, a world team champion in 2010, was made to work hard for her place in the main draw as she battled past Japan's Miyuu Kihara 7-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9, 12-10.

Top seeded players will enter proceedings when main draw action begins on Thursday (November 16).

China’s Fan Zhendong and Xu Xin are top seeds in the men's singles and will be desperate to avoid a repeat of their shock defeats at last week's German Open.

Fan lost to eventual home winner Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the semi-final while Xu suffered a straight sets quarter-final defeat to Lee Sang-su of South Korea.

In the women’s singles event, China’s reigning world and Olympic champion Ding Ning is the top seed as she aims to win the Swedish Open for the first time in her career and regain first place in the world rankings.
