The teams played out a 1-1 draw yesterday to maintain their unbeaten records at the tournament, keeping them top of the standings in Guatemala City.

Guatemala ensured their progression to the gold medal match by winning both of their matches in a busy day for the home side today.

They first earned a 2-0 victory over Nicaragua, before securing a narrow 1-0 win against El Salvador in their final group fixture.

The result guaranteed that they would finish top of the standings on 10 points, having completed all of their group matches.

Costa Rica knew they would join them should they win their game in hand, having maintained their high standard of performance today.

A hat-trick from Daniel Contreras paved the way for a 5-0 win over Honduras.

The individual performance also saw Contreras move out in front as the tournament’s top scorer on seven goals, with Honduras' Fredy Oliva second on five.

Honduras and El Salvador were unable to reach the final as both teams only have three points to date, while Nicaragua lie fifth in the group standings.

The tournament also celebrated what is believed to be a first in an international IBSA match, as female official Hilary Ramírez of Costa Rica was the referee.

The IBSA Blind Football Central American Championships are being hosted by the Guatemalan Committee for the Blind and Deaf.

They form part of IBSA’s Central American Blind Football Development Project, utilising support from the International Paralympic Committee to develop and spread the game to the region.

The winners of the tournament will qualify for the 2018 IBSA Blind Football World Championships, scheduled to take place in Spain’s capital Madrid from June 5 to 18.
