Japan’s Miyu Nagasaki progressed to the main draw of the International Table Tennis Federation World Tour Platinum German Open in Magdeburg.

The 15-year-old featured in one of the two top qualifying groups at the tournament, which allowed the winners to automatically advance to the main draw.

She began her campaign impressively by earning a 11-4, 11-9, 13-11, 6-11, 12-10 win over Germany’s Nina Mittelham.

Despite then losing a thrilling seven game clash with Dutch player Li Jie 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 12-10, 8-11, 7-11, 11-5, the Japanese player progressed on game ratio, having won seven and lost six in her two matches.

The ratio was used to determine the group winner as Mittelham claimed a surprise 6-11, 14-12, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 win over Li.

Li won six games but lost seven across her two contests, while Mittelham won five and was beaten in six.

The second spot in the main draw was claimed by Hong Kong’s Doo Hoi Kem, who emerged as the winner of both her matches.

She beat beaten Spain’s Galia Dvorak 11-8, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5 in her first group tie, before ensuring progression with a hard fought 11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-3 success against Taiwan’s Lee I-Chen.

The winners of the remaining 28 groups will head into a preliminary round of the competition, with the victors of the ties then sealing spots in the main draw.

They will join the top 16 seeds, as well as Doo and Nagasaki.

There was positive news for the host nation in men’s qualifying as Bastian Steger claimed two victories to top his group.

He beat Hungary’s Daniel Kosiba 11-6, 11-4, 8-11, 11-10, 11-5 in the opening group match, before overcoming England’s Sam Walker 11-3, 11-6, 11-10, 11-3.

The results saw him take a place in the preliminary round of the men’s competition, with players set to battle tomorrow to secure spots in the main draw.

Steger will face the winner of the match between South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon and Mizuki Oikawa of Japan.

Portugal’s Marcos Frietas, a men’s doubles gold medallist at the 2011 European Championships, also moved to the brink of the main draw.

He will face the winners of the match between Sweden’s Jon Persson and England’s Liam Pitchford.

Pitchford’s compatriot Paul Drinkhall was the recipient of a bye to the final preliminary round, along with Germany’s Ricardo Walther.

The pair will meet tomorrow, with the winner progressing to the main draw.
