China's women and Australia's men were among teams to guarantee semi-final spots today at the Pacific-Asia Curling Championships in Erina.

China defeated winless hosts Australia 11-4 in the women's competition, at the Erina Ice Arena.

Jiang Yilun's team pulled away in the second half of the contest after only leading by a single point, 5-4, at the halfway stage.

“Our goal coming here was to qualify," said Chinese coach Marcel Rocque.

"We have accomplished our first goal.

"Adjusting to conditions and surfaces is part of the training we do so I am happy they [the athletes] can pick up on changes and handle them fairly well.”

Defending champions South Korea remained unbeaten after a 9-4 victory over Japan.

Japan still harbour hopes of reaching the playoffs, as do Hong Kong after they won 10-7 against New Zealand.

Australia's men lost 9-2 to already qualified defending champions Japan, but secured their playoff spot after South Korea lost 6-5 to China after an extra-end.

Both South Korea and China have won four times and stand a good chance of also reaching the semi-finals.

A youthful Kazakhstan team gained a first win of the competition after a thrilling 9-8 success against Hong Kong.

The Kazakhs had a 7-3 lead after seven ends only to concede four points in the eighth.

They then held their nerve to score two in the ninth and claim victory.
