Australia’s Alex Hoberg claimed gold on the opening day of the Oceania and Commonwealth Shooting Federations’ Championships in Brisbane.

The home favourite emerged as the winner of the men’s 10 metres air rifle competition, securing the Commonwealth title at the revamped Belmont Shooting Complex.

Hoberg finished with a total score of 247.6 points to top the standings, with compatriot Jack Rossiter second on 245.5.

The podium was rounded off by India’s Deepak Kumar with a tally of 224.2 points.

The Oceania title was earned by Australia’s Dane Sampson after he finished with a total of 251.2 points in a separate event. 

Rossiter and Hoberg completed the top three on 243.4 and 221.3 points respectively.

India’s Heena Sidhu claimed victory in the women’s 10m air pistol event, scoring 240.8 points to take the Commonwealth title.

She was closely followed by Australia’s Elena Galiabovitch, forced to settle for second place with a total of 238.2 points.

Australia’s Kristy Gillman, the final penultimate athlete to be eliminated, took the bronze medal on 213.7 points.

Galiabovitch then claimed the Oceania crown by achieving a score of 238.9 points.

Her team-mates Lalita Yauhleuskaya and Gillman rounded off the top three on 232.8 and 206.2 points respectively.

The women’s skeet event saw England’s Amber Hill secure the Commonwealth title, achieving a total of 51 targets hit in the final.

Australia’s Chloe Tipple and Aislin Jones managed 47 and 40 respectively to complete the podium positions.

Laura Coles beat Jones in a shoot-off in the Oceanian event after both athletes had struck 51 targets.

 Tipple earned bronze after hitting 39 targets.

Gold Coast 2018 chairman Peter Beattie was among the medal presenters during the day, due to the Belmont Shooting Complex being set to host Commonwealth Games competition next year.
