China’s Zhu Yuling claimed International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Women’s World Cup victory at the Pan Am Centre in Canadian city Markham.

The final saw top seeds Zhu and Liu Shiwen go head-to-head, guaranteeing Chinese success at the event.

A dramatic contest followed between the duo, with replicating their seven game epic from the Asian Cup earlier this year.

Liu, who was beaten on that occasion, looked on course to gain revenge when she took a two game lead in the final.

Her rival was able to hit back to level the scores, only for Liu to secure the fifth game and move one away from earning the World Cup title.

Liu appeared to be on the brink of extending her unbeaten record in World Cup finals, having appeared in four previously, winning them all.

Her most recent triumph came in 2015 following wins in 2009, 2012 and 2013.

Zhu would prevent her opponent from maintaining the unbeaten record, as she held her nerve again to force the contest into a decider

The top seed then saved a match point, before clinching a dramatic 11-13, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10 win.

It marked the Zhu maiden triumph at the event, having beaten Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching 11-4, 11-9, 11-3, 11-4 in the semi-finals to advance to the final for the first time.

Liu had won 11-5, 11-7, 11-1, 11-6 against defending champion Miu Hirano of Japan in her semi-final.

Hirano, who became the youngest winner of the tournament when she triumphed at the age of 17 last year, missed out on third place.

She was beaten 8-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 by Cheng, who avenged her loss in last year’s final.
