Katie Archibald claimed the first British gold of the 2017 European Cycling Union (UEC) Elite Track Championships in Berlin today with a superb performance in the individual pursuit.

Archibald, who won Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro last year in the team pursuit, successfully defended the title she also won in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

She produced an impressive time of 3min 29.328sec to comfortably beat Polish rival Justyna Kaczkowska by 3.24 seconds.

It marked Archibald's 10th European medal and followed the silver medal she won in the team pursuit yesterday.

Silvia Valsecchi of Italy claimed bronze in 3:33.908.

It came on the second day of a continental event featuring 338 riders - 120 women and 218 men - from 28 countries competing at the German capital's Velodrom.

Trine Schmidt of Denmark won the women's points race in the second final of the day.

She was the only athletes to gain two laps on the rest of the field and consequently posted a winning haul of 62 points.

Gulnaz Badykova of Russia managed 31 for silver as Tatsiana Sharakova of Belarus finished a further point back in third.

Belgium's Gerben Thijssen then triumphed in the men's elimination race.

Russia were forced to settle for second best once again, this time through Maksim Piskunov, while Rui Oliveira of Portugal finished third.

Albert Torres of Spain also won the men's omnium today.

His haul of 142 points saw him beat Julius Johanson of Denmark by two points and France's Benjamin Thomas by five.
