Olympic medallists Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt are expected to make their return to wrestling at next month’s Senior Indian National Championships in Indore.

The news, reported The Indian Express, has led to hope that both will be competing at next year's Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast and the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia as the Championships serve as the qualification tournament for the two events.

Sushil is India’s only wrestler to win medals at two Olympic Games having claimed men's 66 kilograms freestyle bronze at Beijing 2008 and silver at London 2012.

The 34-year-old last competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he claimed the 74kg title.

He has since been sidelined due to a shoulder injury and last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with Narsingh Yadav qualifying from his weight category.

According to The Indian Express, Sushil is training for the Senior National Championships, scheduled to take place from November 15 to 18, at the Chhatrasal Stadium in New Delhi.

Yogeshwar, meanwhile, has been preparing at his academy in Bali.

The 34-year-old competed at Rio 2016 but suffered elimination at the hands of Mongolia’s Ganzorigiin Mandakhnaran in the opening round of the men's 65kg freestyle division.

He is expected to move up to 70kg for next year’s Asian Games in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.

In women’s wrestling, Indian sisters Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat are also set to return to action.

Both Commonwealth Games gold medallists, they are scheduled to compete today at the Senior State trials in Rohtak.

Geeta and Babita will be vying for a place on the Haryana State team, which sends two teams to the Senior National Championships.

In May, it was confirmed that no changes will be made to the Wrestling Federation of India's Olympic selection policy for Tokyo 2020 despite the controversy which dogged preparations for last year's Olympic Games.

Only grapplers who directly secure quota places themselves will be eligible for consideration.

There will be no trials between rivals for specific places unless they have each secured quota spots.

This differs from the system used to select Indian teams for other events, including World Championships and both the Asian and Commonwealth Games.

It followed a legal row between Yadav and Kumar for the sole 74kg freestyle spot on the team at Rio 2016.

Yadav, a gold medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, secured a quota spot by virtue of his bronze medal-winning performance at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas.

He was, therefore, selected over Kumar, who had missed that event.

Kumar unsuccessfully appealed to the High Court in New Delhi to overturn the verdict and force a trial.

In the end, though, neither participated at Rio 2016 after Yadav was removed from the team after failing a drugs test.
