Ikhsan Rumbay of Indonesia was the highest-profile casualty on day two of singles action as the seventh seed crashed out of the men's event on home soil following a shock defeat to Takuma Obayashi of Japan at the Badminton World Federation World Junior Championships in Yogyakarta.

The 17-year-old would have been hoping to use home advantage to progress to the later rounds of the tournament but was beaten 16-21, 21-19, 21-17 by the unseeded Obayashi at the GOR Among Rogo Arena.

The marathon match, which lasted an hour and 12 minutes, was among the highlights on the second day of the competition in the Indonesian city.

Top men's singles seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn battled into the next round as he edged past Chinese opponent Gu Jenfeng in three games.

Vitidsarn, who won the India Junior International Grand Prix tournament last month, looked on course for another straightforward win when he won the opening game.

But Gu fought back to level, taking the match into a deciding game.

The 16-year-old Thai player recovered from the setback to clinch a 21-17, 13-21, 21-18 triumph in a minute shy of an hour.

Jia Wei Joel Koh of Singapore awaits for Vitidsarn tomorrow.

Vitidsarn's compatriot Pattarasuda Chaiwan, the top seed in the women's singles event, enjoyed a much more comfortable outing as she swept aside Sasha Lim of Australia 21-9, 21-10.

It was another ominous display from the world number 128, who will take on South Korea's Se Young An in the next round.

The tournament in Yogyakarta, staged after the conclusion of the mixed team event on Sunday (October 15), continues tomorrow.
