Italian Olympic gold medallist Aldo Montano has been elected President of the Athletes' Commission of the International Fencing Federation (FIE).

He becomes a member of the FIE Executive Committee which will meet on November 24.

The Commission, which comprises elite fencers from around the world and gives a voice to athletes with regards to the proceedings and decisions of the FIE, had met on October 7 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

In September the FIE Executive Committee added six fencers, nominated by their respective member federations, to a further six elected non-weapon specific athletes participating in the Fencing World Championships in Leipzig, Germany, in July, making a total of 12 members. 

Commission members will serve for a four-year term.

As well as Montano from Italy, Japan's Yuki Ota, a representative of the Executive Committee, Egypt's Alaaeldin Abouelkassem, France's Yannick Borel, Inna Deriglazova from Russia, Peru's Maria Luisa Doig, Ukraine's Olga Kharlan, Benjamin Kleibrink from Germany, Japan's Kazuyasu Minobe, Gbahi Gwladys Sakoa from Ivory Coast, Yujie Sun from China, Hungary's Aron Szilagyi and Mariel Zagunis of the United States are also members of the Commission. 

Thirty-eight-year-old Montano won individual sabre gold at the Athens 2004 Olympics.
