Elisabeth Vathje and Barrett Martineau struck gold in the women's and men's events respectively at the Canadian National Skeleton Championships in Calgary.

The event, held at the Olympic Park in the Canadian city, forms part of the country's selection process for the upcoming International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup season.

The World Cup team is due to be named by Bobsleigh Skeleton Canada, the governing body for the sport in the nation, on November 1.

The team chosen is also likely to feature in the squad for February's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

Vathje, a World Championships bronze medallist in Winterberg in 2015, fought off competition from Mirela Rahneva and Jane Channell.

Rahneva took home the silver medal and Channell earned bronze.

Martineau, who won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Igls, was crowned men's champion at the event in Calgary, which hosted the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.

The 26-year-old topped the podium ahead of Dave Greszczyszyn, who claimed silver, while bronze went to Evan Neufeldt.

The IBSF World Cup campaign is due to begin on on November 9 in Lake Placid.
