Russia's Maxim Sivolap and Igor Velichko claimed their first International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach World Tour title at the Qinzhou Open today.

The tournament's 15th seeds rallied past Mexico's Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros in a three-set thriller at Haibin Square.

Virgen and Ontiveros, seeded fourth in China, claimed the opening set 21-19.

Sivolap and Velichko managed to take the second 21-19 and force the tie-breaker.

In the third set, the Mexicans managed to defend six match points to level it at 18-18, but Velichko converted on the seventh with a smash to win it 20-18.

"We are really happy," said Sivolap.

"We played on almost our maximum level and won the tournament and we can't express our feelings now.

"The gold medal shows that we are going in the right direction and we have been working strongly.

"Our aim was to go for the gold medal and we got it and everybody is really happy."

Earlier today, third seeds Nadir Diaz Gomez Nivaldo and Bayard Sergio Reynaldo Gonzalez of Cuba overcame top seeds Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle of Belgium 16-21, 21-16, 15-11 to win bronze, the first medal for them at any World Tour event.
