World number one Rafael Nadal and Swiss star Roger Federer both progressed to the third round of the Shanghai Masters with victories in contrasting fashion today.

Nadal, who arrived in Shanghai following his China Open triumph on Sunday (October 8), dropped just three games on his way to a 6-2, 6-1 demolition of unseeded American Jared Donaldson at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.

Italy's Fabio Fognini awaits in the next round for the Spaniard.

Federer was also in convincing form but was made to work much harder for his place in round three as he battled through a tough contest against Argentina's Diego Schwartzman to win 6-4, 7-6.

The 19-time Grand Slam champion will face Alexandr Dolgopolov in his next encounter at the Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour Masters 1000 event.

Elsewhere, Australian Nick Kyrgios has been fined a total of $10,000 (£7,600/€8,400) after walking off court during his first-round match with American Steve Johnson.

Kyrgios, who is known for his temperament and on-court antics, was heard threatening to retire if he lost the first set tie-break.

The 22-year-old, who had made the claim after becoming frustrated with the crowd inside the arena, subsequently quit the match after Johnson served an ace to clinch the opener 7-6.

His decision was greeted with a chorus of boos as he walked off court.

The fiery Australian, who was deducted a point during the match for an audible obscenity and was also warned for smashing two balls out of court in protest at a line call, later took to Twitter to insist a stomach bug and a shoulder problem were the reasons behind his retirement.

Kyrgios has also been denied his $21,085 (£16,000/€17,800) prize money from the event.

The incident marked the second consecutive edition of the Shanghai Masters where Kyrgios has caused controversy.

At last year's tournament, Kyrgios was given an eight-week ban for his behaviour, which included claims that he had not tried his best during a straight sets defeat to Germany's Mischa Zverev.
