India enjoyed a successful day in the mixed doubles qualification round as both of their pairs booked a place in the main draw of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Dutch Open in Almere.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnapa overcame the Swedish duo of Richard Eidestedt and Clara Nistad 21-17, 21-12 to reach the next round at the Topsportcentrum.

Manu Attri and Maneesha then ensured there would be at least two Indian pairings in the mixed doubles main draw when they beat Jasper Koppen and Judith van Cruchten of The Netherlands 21-15, 21-7.

It proved a disappointing outing for the host nation as Koppen and Van Cruchten's loss was one of two Dutch defeats on the opening day of action at the Badminton World Federation Grand Prix tournament.

Their other reverse came in the final match of the day as Lars Kros and Timo Stoffelen were beaten 21-6, 21-13 by the Russian duo of Nikita Khakimov and Andrey Parakhodin.

Main draw action at the competition in the Dutch city is due to begin tomorrow.

Wang Tzu-wei of Chinese Taipei, a double gold medallist at the recent Summer Universiade in his home country, is the top seed in the men's singles event and begins his pursuit of the title when he takes on Pratul Joshi.
