Hosts Indonesia began their pursuit of the mixed team title in style as they thrashed Brazil on the opening day of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Junior Championships in Yogyakarta.

The Indonesian side recorded a comfortable 5-0 win over the South American nation as the Suhandinata Cup got underway GOR Among Rogo Arena.

Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Siti Silva Ramadhanti got Indonesia off to the best possible start with a 21-16, 2-15 win against Fabricio Farias and Jaqueline Lima in the opening mixed doubles match of the Group H1 encounter.

Gatjra Piliang Cupu put the home side 2-0 up when he beat Waleson Santos 21-8, 21-11 in just 21 minutes, before victory was sealed by Gregoria Tunjung as she won her singles clash with Juliana Viana 21-19, 21-12.

Muhammad Fikri and Adnan Maulana made light work of Santos and Farias in the men's doubles, emerging with a convincing 21-16, 21-10 win.

Jauza Sugiarto and Ribka Sugiarto completed the whitewash for the hosts as they swept aside Lima and Viana 21-9, 21-13 in the women's doubles match.

Indonesia were one of several nations to earn a 5-0 win today as fellow contenders Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Thailand also secured easy victories.

Chinese Taipei accounted for Hong Kong in Group G, while Thailand beat the Philippines in Group F1.

Malaysia were also in good form, dispatching Armenia 5-0 in Group C1.

"We have a balanced team and we are again hoping to reach the final like we did last year," Malaysia team manager Goh Yen Yen.

The tournament, which precedes the BWF World Junior Championships, continues tomorrow.
