Botsang Tshenyego is the new President of the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) after being elected at the organisation's general meeting in Gaborone.

Tshenyego, who received the support of 15 delegates, beat off competition from four rivals.

Ookeditse Malesu garnered six votes with Tebogo Lebotse-Sebego and France Mabiletsa gaining two each.

Daniel Molaodi managed a solitary vote.

Elections for other positions saw women gain 43 per cent of the seats on the Board, a new record high.

Tshenyego, who is replacing outgoing President Negroes Kgosietsile, thanked the delegates for voting for him, saying that alone was an indication they had confidence in him.

"I again think these elections were phenomenal in many ways and I think the biggest winner here is women in sport," he said, according to All Africa.

"There are three women in the Board and this is something that is unprecedented.

"I would like to thank them for pushing this agenda of women's representation and ensuring that they succeed."

Moses Moruisi will serve as the BNOC first vice-president after beating Keenese Katisenge and Rampa Mosweu.

For the second vice-president position, Bernadette Moruti had to win in the second round after failing to secure a simple majority.

She beat Anastacia Makwa and Tshiamo Rantao.

The BNOC additional members are Michael Moroka, Yarona Sharp and Tebo Segaise.
