A Nigerian taekwondo player is attempting to use the sport as a tool to encourage gender equality in the African nation.

Thursdaline Peter, also a referee and a coach, teaches self-defence and competes in international taekwondo competitions.

She has won medals representing Nigeria in African and Asian competitions, both as an athlete and referee.

Peter's accolades include the "Best Referee" award at July's Chuncheon Korea Open International Championship.

In a recent interview, Peter claimed she got into the sport in a bid to help women against abuse.

She claimed she often stood up to boys who attempted to bully her when she was younger.

"I want to urge women out there not to allow any man to make them feel inferior by telling them they are weak," she told BBC Africa.

"You are strong.

"You have the strength."
