It was confirmed yesterday that Birmingham was the only city to have submitted an official bid for the Games before the deadline.

Their bid received assurances, prior to the deadline, from the United Kingdom Government that they would help provide funding if they are awarded the Games.

The city is now poised to be the replacement for Durban after the South African city was stripped of the event in March after failing to meet a series of financial deadlines.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are due to provide most of the funding for the Games, expected to be up to £750 million ($1 billion/€850 million).

Birmingham City Council would provide 25 per cent of the total cost of staging the Games.

They have stressed services in the city would not be affected, stating that funding would come from a variety of partners.

"Interim leader Ian Ward has made it clear that there is a red line around the revenue budget - which pays for services - so that means services will not be affected by the authority paying for the Games," a Birmingham City Council spokesperson told the BBC.

"The whole project is a collaborative one with many other parties including West Midland Combined Authority, Sandwell Council and three Local Enterprise Partnerships, so there's a range of partners involved and the cost shared and worked out together.

"We are now also working with the Department of Digital, Culture Media and Sport and the Treasury, who obviously also want to offer value for money."

It comes as bin workers in the city have been taking industrial action since June over plans to cut jobs and save money.

This has resulted in rubbish remaining piled up on the city's streets.

Council leader Ward has expressed his hope negotiations will be able to resume shortly to solve the dispute.

Birmingham's bid documentation is expected to be reviewed by the Commonwealth Games Federation, with the organisation convening for a Board Meeting in Sri Lanka on October 5 and 6.

A final decision on the host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games is expected by the end of the year.

Several cities expressed initial interest in replacing Durban but have failed to follow it up.

Victoria, hosts of the 1994 Commonwealth Games, failed to gain the backing of the British Columbia Provincial or Canadian Federal Government but a group of prominent businessmen there are trying to continue to keep the campaign alive.

Kuala Lumpur, who followed Victoria as hosts in 1998, had also investigated the possibility of bidding but the Malaysian Government have decided not to proceed.

The city may bid for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, however. 

Several Australian cities had also hoped to bid but will only be put forward if there is no alternative as Gold Coast is already staging next year's Commonwealth Games.
