The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is to give $100 (£75/€85) to the Mexican Red Cross for every dunk completed at the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Mexico City Masters tomorrow and Sunday (October 1).

Following the tragic earthquake on September 19, which measured 7.1 on the Richter magnitude scale and has killed more than 300 people and toppled many buildings, FIBA discussed the relevance of holding the event this year.

But local authorities have given FIBA permission for the event, previously held in 2015 and 2016, to continue.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) postponed the World Para Swimming and World Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico City following the earthquake.

The games are due to take place at the Perisur Shopping Mall, Mexico's largest retail space.

The top-two placed teams from each pool advance to a standard knock-out round which starts at the quarter-finals stage on Sunday.

The Mexican Red Cross is a non-governmental organisation affiliated with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and has been one of the most active groups taking part in earthquake recovery and rescue efforts, not only in its own country but also in the United States.

It deployed a group of highly skilled volunteers to Texas as part of their assistance to the relief efforts coordinated by the American Red Cross,  where they helped with sheltering and distribution efforts, while also connecting with Spanish-speaking disaster survivors to keep them informed about support available to them.

Earlier this week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and IPC both launched campaigns to provide financial support to efforts in Mexico following last week’s devastating earthquake.

IOC President Thomas Bach has created a fund to support the victims while the Arizona Diamondbacks, a Major League Baseball team, the Chicanos Foundation for the Cause and Japan's Hiroshima Prefecture have all pledged to donate to Mexico's Olympic Committee (COM).

Chicanos Foundation for the Cause is an organisation that prepares Mexican-American athletes representing Mexico in international competitions.

Hiroshima Prefecture will donate $30,000 (£22,300/€25,400) and will sponsor Mexican athletes as they prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
