Canada topped the standings in today's qualification event on day one of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Nations Cup Jumping grand final in Barcelona.

It is the fifth consecutive year that the final is taking place at the Real Club de Polo in the Catalan city.

Only eight of the 15 nations have made it through to the deciding class on Saturday (September 30) while the remainder will drop into the Challenge Cup tomorrow.

The North Americans were the only team out of the 15-strong field to complete the course without conceding any faults.

The squad of Yann Candele, Tiffany Foster, Chris Pratt and Eric Lamaze were faultless over the track set by course designer Santiago Varela of Spain.

Defending champions Germany, France, the United States and The Netherlands all finished level in second on four points.

Switzerland, Belgium, and Sweden all shared sixth place with eight faults.

Newly-crowned European champions Ireland also posted eight faults but, as the team with the slowest combined time, failed to qualify for the final.

The remaining teams all missed out on a place in Saturday's grand final.

Ireland, Italy, Great Britain, New Zealand, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates and Spain will now take to the course in tomorrow's Challenge Cup.
