Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz and Brazil’s Hugo Calderano have claimed the men’s and women’s singles titles at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Pan American Championships in Colombia.

Diaz proved to be the star of the women’s competition, with the 17-year-old player advancing through to the gold medal match in Cartagena de Indias.

She would face the challenge of the United States’ Wu Yue, the gold medallist from the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.

The contest proved a tight affair, with each player winning three games to take the match into a decider.

Diaz eventually emerged as the winner, holding her nerve to claim an 8-11, 11-7, 3-11, 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-7 victory.

In the men’s competition, 21-year-old Brazilian Calderano saw off the challenge of his compatriot Thiago Monteiro with a convincing performance in the final.

Calderano wrapped up a 11-8, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 victory to take the gold medal.

The finalists had already been part of the Brazilian squad which earned gold in the team event, along with Eric Jouti and Vitor Ishiy.

They emerged as 3-0 winners over Argentina in the final, with the result seeing Brazil qualify as the Latin American representatives for the IITF Team World Cup in London.

Brazil also secured the women’s spot, as they earned a 3-1 win over the United States in the gold medal match.
