France's Louis Giard has the lead in the men's competition following the opening day of racing at the RS:X Windsurfing World Championships in Japan.

Organisers were unsure whether competition would go ahead after severe tropical cyclone Talim left a blustery 25 knots of wind and huge breaking waves in the harbour entrance.

The start was delayed in the hope that conditions may eventually calm and they did as wind dropped to just 10 knots which almost proved to not be enough.

Giard immediately highlighted his medal intentions as he won both of today's races at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic course in Enoshima to finish on two points.

"It was difficult, the first race was a bit of mess with big wind shifts and some marks moving but I think I did ok to finish without losing places," said Giard.

Chasing behind in second is home favourite Makoto Tomizawa on seven points, after he posted a third and a fourth today.

Poland's Pawel Tarnowski, Greece's Byron Kokkalanis and Shahar Zubari of Israel are all on nine points in third.

In the women's event, China's Peina Chen also enjoyed a superb day.

She took two race wins to finish the day at the top of the standings on two points.

Immediately behind her in both races was Poland's Zofia Noceti Klepacka, who occupies second on four points following to second place finishes.

Third belongs to Chinese duo Hongmei Shi and Jiahui Wu, who both collected five points.

Action is due to continue tomorrow.
