A number of German Social Accident Institution branches have signed deals to sponsor the 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships, scheduled to take place in Hamburg.

An agreement with the organisers was signed earlier this month by the German Social Accident Insurance Institutions for trade and logistics, health and welfare services (BGW), transport and traffic and the administrative sector.

“BGW is particularly linked to inclusion," said Stephan Brandenburg, chief executive of BGW.

"We have always had direct connections to it.

"Our task is to help insured persons to return to work and social life after an accident or a work-related illness.

"This is where sport plays an important role and we gladly support the 2018 Wheelchair Basketball World Championships."

BG Hospital in Hamburg has also agreed to a sponsorship deal.

The world's best players will compete for global crowns between August 17 and 26 at the Wilhelmsburger Inselparkarena,

A total of 16 men's teams and 12 women's teams will compete in all, with the German bid beating off competition from Dubai, Tokyo and Los Angeles to host the event.

More than 1,000 participants and 50,000 spectators are expected.

The men's and women's World Championships were held separately when they last took place in 2014.

In the men's event, Australia beat the United States to gold in Incheon, South Korea, with Canada winning the women's crown ahead of Germany on home soil in Toronto.

The US won both the men's and women's Paralympic titles in Rio de Janeiro last year.
