United States triumphed at the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) Americas Championship by beating rivals Canada in the final.

The Paralympic silver medallists won the gold medal game 54-43 at the Parque Olimpico in Paraguay's capital Asuncion.

Both teams have also qualified for the 2018 IWRF World Championship in Australian city Sydney by clinching the two spots available from the regional event.

Seven teams took part in the Americas Championship in all.

They initially contested a round-robin phase which the US ended undefeated.

Canada finished second in the group to set up the final with the Americans but they were to ultimately fall short.

Brazil beat Colombia 48-42 to win the bronze medal.

In the battle for fifth place, Argentina beat Chile 56-36.

Hosts Paraguay finished last in the round-robin and placed seventh. 

Josh Wheeler of the US was named as the tournament's most valuable player.

Sydney will host the World Championships between August 4 and 10 next year, at the Olympic Park Complex.
