The United States beat previously undefeated South Korea today to take the outright lead in the super round of the World Baseball Softball Confederation Under-18 World Cup in Thunder Bay.

Both teams came into the match with three wins out of three, but it was the Americans who triumphed, 2-0, at the Port Arthur Stadium.

Michael Siani and Nolan Gorman registered the crucial scores.

Also tasting victory today were hosts Canada, who overcame Japan 6-4 to move level with their opponents on two wins from four outings.

The one other super round encounter saw Australia defeat Cuba 3-0 for their first victory.

Cuba remain winless and occupy last spot behind fifth-placed Australia.

In the consolation round, Chinese Taipei made it four wins out of four thanks to a 4-1 success over The Netherlands.

The Dutch’s first defeat means they are in second place behind the Taiwanese.

There were also wins today for Mexico, 5-4 against Italy, and Nicaragua, 11-1 against South Africa.  

The competition is due to continue tomorrow.

The top two at the end of the super round will contest the final on Sunday (September 10).
