Sochi 2014 Olympic gold medallist Eva Samková was the fastest women’s qualifier as the 2017-18 International Ski Federation Snowboard Cross World Cup season begun in Cerro Catedral in Argentina today.

The Czech clocked a time of 1 min 03.40sec on the 1,000 metres long technical course in the Patagonian resort.

She was 1.49 seconds quicker than second best qualifier Faye Gulini of the United States.

Gulini’s compatriot Lindsey Jacobellis, a five-time world champion, was a further 0.34 seconds behind in third.

France’s Nelly Moenne Loccoz, Canada’s Carle Brenneman and Italy’s Michela Moioli completed the top six.

In the men’s qualification event, Canada’s Christopher Robanske came out on top with a time of 1:00.27.

Australia’s Alex Pullin was just 0.06 seconds back in the runners-up spot, while Italy’s Lorenzo Sommariva was 0.12 seconds off the pace in third.

Germany's Paul Berg finished fourth with the American duo of Mick Dierdorff and Jake Vedder occupying fifth and sixth place respectively.

The men’s and women’s finals are both scheduled to take place tomorrow.
