Organisers of the 2018 Women’s Hockey World Cup in London have announced that they have received more than 100,000 ticket applications in the ballot.

Action is due to take place at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London from July 21 to August 5.

These 100,000 applications come on top of tickets that were made available to members of clubs affiliated with England Hockey and previous international match purchasers as part of a hockey family priority window.

Organisers have revealed that 50 per cent of applications have never been to an international England Hockey event before.

With children’s tickets priced from just £1 ($1.32/€1.09), 24 per cent of tickets applied for are for under 18s.

Applications have come from more than 30 countries with non-England sessions making up 23 per cent of demand.

"As a team we absolutely cannot wait for the World Cup on home soil, and to have this much demand with almost a year to go is amazing," said England women’s team captain Alex Danson.

"To know that every England pool game is already sold out is a huge fillip for the squad and we cannot wait to put on a show for our supporters."

Supporters who have applied for tickets in the ballot will be notified by the end of September, whether they have been successful or not.

Later in the year, a general sale will take place around the announcement of the complete tournament schedule with dates still to be confirmed.

"We are delighted to hear about the huge demand for tickets for the Women’s Hockey World Cup in London in 2018," added International Hockey Federation chief executive Jason McCracken.

"As part of our 10-year Hockey Revolution strategy we are constantly striving for all of our events to be 'Big, Bold, Packed and Loud’, and with 100,000 ticket applications as part of the public ballot it is clear that the competition at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre next summer looks likely to be all of those things and more."

It has also been revealed that London-based advertising and brand creation specialists MATTA have partnered with England Hockey to launch the ‘Pure Hockey Gold’ campaign.

The campaign will be used to raise awareness in the run up to the competition.

Creatively it centres on the theme of gold, which points to the memory of the home nations' gold medal-winning players at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

“A year out from the event, we have experienced a phenomenal response to the campaign and massive interest in the Hockey Women’s World Cup ticket ballot, so we’re really pleased," commented Andy Brown, head of sales and marketing at England Hockey.

“Pure Hockey Gold really helps transform the image of hockey - it’s fantastic, we’ve had some really positive comments from fans, and we can’t wait to roll it out further.”

Pure Hockey Gold can currently be seen in print, outdoor and online, with targeted digital media playing a large role.
