Australia's Shakira Westdorp defended her women's Stand Up Paddle (SUP) title at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World SUP and Paddleboard Championship in Vorupør.

Westdorp achieved the highest qualification score yesterday and produced an equally impressive performance to seal victory in north-west Denmark.

She finished the competition with a total score of 11.87.

France’s Justin Dupont earned the silver medal by achieving a score of 9.00, while Emily Merrill of the United States took the bronze with 7.34.

“I am so stoked, I just want to congratulate all the competitors,” said Westdorp.

“The conditions changed from gnarly to pretty good this afternoon, so it was awesome I was able to showcase my skills in varying conditions.

“The level of women’s SUP surfing is going through the roof and being on the top of that is pretty special.

“I am over the moon right now.”

Brazil’s Luiz Diniz triumphed in the men’s competition, as he achieved a total score of 12.47.

The podium was completed by Australia’s Harry Maskell and France’s Benoit Carpentier, who achieved scores of 11.17 and 9.47 respectively.

“The morning the waves showed up, the wind went offshore, and the world’s best SUP surfers took full advantage,” said Fernando Aguerre, ISA President.

“Cold Hawaii lived up to its name, with some cold weather and excellent surfing conditions.

“Shakira Westdorp and Luiz Diniz will forever go down in history as the first SUP surfing ISA world champions crowned in Cold Hawaii, Denmark, and Europe.

“The technical races and team relay race that are set to take place this weekend will define who will emerge as the team world champion.”
