The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has today approved Bhutan, Grenada, Peru and Guyana as new members at the governing body's General Assembly here.

A total of 142 members voted in favour of the approval, while two voted against and one abstained.

"All applicant organisations have signed the membership fee application documents and have submitted the requested documentation," IPC chief executive Xavier Gonzalez said.

"The documentation has been fully reviewed to ensure that all organisations meet the requirements of members.

"The Governing Board has already granted provisional membership to the NPCs (National Paralympic Committees) of Bhutan, Grenada and Peru and also endorsed the more recent application of the NPC of Guyana."

Representatives of the NPCs of Bhutan, Grenada and Peru were present for a welcoming ceremony.

IPC President Sir Philp Craven confirmed the NPC of Guyana will receive their certificate by mail at a later date.

Peru is due to host the 2019 Parapan American Games in its capital city of Lima.

Members also voted on the termination of Mauritania's membership with the IPC claiming not to have had any contact from the country's NPC for more than four years.

Nations currently suspended by the IPC are Russia, Djibouti, Malta, St Vincent and the Grendines and Sudan.

Russia were suspended on August 7, 2016 due to an inability to fulfil its IPC obligations, in particular its obligations to comply with the World Anti-Doping Code and the IPC Anti-Doping Code.

The four other countries are suspended due to failure to pay membership fees.

Djibouti and Sudan owe fees for 2016 and 2017, while Malta and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines owe for 2017.

Gonzalez said the suspensions of all four nations will be lifted immediately following payment, or the reaching of an agreement for payment, of the outstanding fees.
